Caerlaverock Castle

Caerlaverock CastleThe short detour from the trail to Caerlaverock Castle, adds an unforgettable dimension to the 'Flooders' experience. Now in ruins though impressively restored and managed by Historic Scotland, this moated, triangular castle was one of the finest Renaissance residences in Scotland.  From 13th to the 17th century,  it was frequently attacked, most notably in 1300 in the famous 'Siege of Caerlaverock.'  Today this spectacular stronghold, along with its fascinating carvings and legends is well worth seeking out.
