Wildfowling is a  special part of the place and always has been. Walkers are asked to respect that this is a way of life for many who live and visit the area. The wild fowl shooting on the reserve is not private and offers mostly free public shooting.  SNH run the permit system which is very carefully monitored. Anyone can apply for a permit.  Most of the shooting is restricted to just before dusk and before and after dawn. Not many people are walking then but  walkers may come across people with guns carrying a goose or a duck. This is normally perfectly in order and has been part of the local custom and tradition for years.
